A Ben Franklin High teacher is on paid leave after using a racial epithet in class.
A white Ben Franklin High teacher who used a racial slur in class has been suspended with pay pending the results of an internal investigation, school spokeswoman Heather Harper Cazayoux said Friday (May 5).
It follows the rapid circulation of student-shot videos Thursday in which the teacher defends, to an incensed African-American student, his right to use the deeply offensive word.
The school would not identify the teacher, who did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.
After the classroom argument, some Franklin students confronted the principal. That turned into an hourlong conversation among students about racial and other inequities.
The video shows the student swearing repeatedly and slamming a desk. Any consequences for him have not yet been determined, Harper Cazayoux said.
